Message When I receive VTC cores, I do a quick external exam to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary then store them - I typically don't get around to cutting them up until weeks or months later. So, I end up eating the cores with internal issues because I'm not so anal as to keep track of who sent what... I'm thinking of changing my ways.

The following are some '94+ VTCs and they are by far the nastiest VTCs that I have taken apart yet. The oil has solidified and I'd hate to see what the rest of the engine looks like. You can see here where the red arrow is pointing, a chunk that has actually formed itself to the cam helix and locked the VTC in a semi advanced state; there is no way these things were working when removed from their engine.

It looks like rust but it's not. It's almost like caramel that's been cooked too hot, which makes it harden (my analogy because I make caramel rolls every now and then :-)

On a separate note, but still VTC related - These are cam helixes and the surface facing up is worn by as much as 0.020" (0.5mm) which would allow the entire sprocket to move axially by this same amount. Roughly 5% of the VTCs I receive have this problem and these parts are throw-away junk. I attribute this problem to JWT VTC springs. Their solid height is not a controlled design aspect, and when the solid height is higher than the installed height, something has to give and this is the part that does. Don't waste your money with any "Heavy Duty" VTC springs, stock Nissan VTC springs work just fine for this application and they're cheaper.

So, like the title says "What's in your VTC???" If you're running my rebuilds, nothing like what you see here is.
